Brief History

2006: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and CATC (then called the Cincinnati Arts & Technology Center) develop the program together, giving CATC graduating seniors an opportunity to apply for patient-attendant positions at Cincinnati Children’s, with full benefits including tuition assistance.

2006-2009: The two organizations learn much about the disadvantages many urban teens face after graduation, and begin to develop supports to enable the students to overcome their backgrounds and be successful in their careers.

2010: Leadership Cincinnati Class #33, looking to address the severe shortage of health care workers projected in coming years, works with CATC and Cincinnati Children’s to increase the scalability, sustainability and positive outcomes of the program. The enhanced program is named “Bridging the Gap.”

2011: Bridging the Gap earns a $150,000 grant from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Social Innovation Fund, for expansion or replication of programs that help area families and individuals.

Formalized life skills training is introduced to help ensure students are trained not only in the skills of their profession but in the work and lifestyle habits essential to success in any career.

2012: The program expanded to include positions and employers in the manufacturing sector, where an increasingly sophisticated and automated industry has unfilled positions for skilled workers.

2017: certifications in technology available to interested students.

2018: As of Spring 2018, 86 students have been sustainably employed through Bridging the Gap.
